Taichung City Government Promotes Amendment of Drunk Driving Law with Increased Penalties for Violators

The Legislative Yuan in March, 2019 passed the amendment draft of the "Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act" related to violations of driving under the influence (DUI) and implementation was announced by the Executive Yuan on July 1, 2019. The Transportation Bureau of the Taichung City Government and Taichung Motor Vehicles Office jointly set up the inter-governmental group in charge of promotion since June 10, 2019 to remind the public to be aware of requirements of the newly amended drunk driving law.
According to the Director General of the Bureau of Transportation key amendments of the newly amended law since July 1, 2019 include increased fines for DUI offenses. Scooter and motorcycle drivers convicted of first time DUI offenses will be subject to a fine of NT$15,000- NT$90,000 as in the old requirement but for car drivers the first time DUI offenses are charged with increased fines between NT$30,000-NT$120,000 from NT$19,500-NT$120,000. Drivers with two accumulated DUI offenses within five years will be charged the maximum fines with NT$90,000 for scooter and motorcycle drivers and NT$120,000 for car drivers. Any driver with more than three DUI offenses will be fined with NT$90,000 for each violation while those who refuse to take a breathalyzer or blood test will also receive increased fines from NT$90,000 to NT$180,000 and those with more than two rejections within five years will be imposed fines of NT$180,000 each time.
