
The Environmental Protection Bureau of Taichung City Government promotes the independent management of effluent quality through technology. This year, Taichung City Government won the international 2023 Smart 50 Awards for its " The Water Quality Sensor (System of Water Steward) Assists Industries Manage Their Influent Water ". Yesterday (1), Chen Hong-yi, Director of Environmental Protection Bureau, dedicated the award and the honor to Mayor Lu Shiow-Yen. Mayor Lu affirmed the efforts of the Environmental Protection Bureau, which combines technologically innovative governance and private units’ works together to improve urban living environment.
Environmental Protection Bureau stated that the bureau has reversed the traditional concept of end-pipe management, innovatively developed low-cost water quality sensors (Water Steward), and guided the industry to manage independently at source. During the promotion period, through pilots and publicity, the bureau promoted the management approach together with Taiwan Surface Finishing Association and obtain the support from industry. By using cloud data to control the quality of discharged water, it strengthen its technological management, and at the same time encourage enterprises to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities and jointly create a virtuous cycle of win-win situations for the environment, economy, and society.
Director Chen of the Environmental Protection Bureau said that using smart technology to manage the environment is the future trend. Building smart cities through public-private cooperation allows public sectors to jointly fulfill environmental responsibilities. Smart-technology management also strengthen the independent management of enterprises and treats the surrounding environment kindly to make neighbors rest assured that enterprises can achieve sustainable management to realize a livable city that “enjoys clean water, builds sustainable Taichung, and becomes environmentally friendly”.
Environmental Protection Bureau pointed out that last year, the bureau has assisted more than 200 companies in the electroplating and metal finishing industries to complete the installation of Water Steward, and the installation rate accounted for more than 90% of these industry. This year, it will continue to expand its installation to other industries. The bureau provides Water Steward equipment, and the manufacturers only need to prepare their own power supply and Internet service. Through the Water Steward cloud integration platform, operators can independently manage the quality of discharged water.
