Taichung Mayor Shiu-Yen Lu prioritizes environmental safety in public construction operations, promoting safety and quality in construction achievements. The Taichung City Government Labor Affairs Bureau recently held the “Golden Safety Project” outstanding contractor selection award ceremony. The Construction Bureau team achieved excellent results in this selection, receiving recognition with two Golden Safety Awards. These include the “Special Excellence Award in Major Projects” for the “Xitun District Shizheng Road Extension Project - Phase 1 (from Industrial 1st Road to Anhe Road) (including commissioned sewer trunk pipeline project from Water Resource Bureau of Taichung City Government) ” and the “Excellence Award in Large-scale Projects” for the “Taichung City South District Zhongming South Road (from Nantun Road Section 1 to Guoguang Road) Road Improvement Project, ” demonstrating the Construction Bureau team's outstanding performance in major public works and their efforts and effectiveness in construction safety and quality management.
Construction Bureau Director Da-Tian Chen explained that the “Xitun District Shizheng Road Extension Project - Phase 1” parallels Dongda Creek. The construction team employed new technology applications using Building Information Modeling for visual-spatial simulation to reduce the probability of water-related accidents. They regularly conducted flood prevention drills, held local briefings, and made timely adjustments to traffic maintenance and detour measures during construction to minimize traffic impact, considering the safety of the construction site, residents, and road users.
Furthermore, the “Taichung City South District Zhongming South Road (from Nantun Road Section 1 to Guoguang Road) Improvement Project” utilized electric construction machinery, systematic aluminum formwork equipment, and intelligent excavators with anti-collision warning functions. The construction site was equipped with 360-degree panoramic imaging equipment, and intelligent voice warning systems were installed in temporary pedestrian passages to detect and remind pedestrians when approaching construction areas automatically. During nighttime operations, the project used intelligent sequential guide lights combined with remote CCTV monitoring systems for traffic surveillance and impact reporting, enabling immediate response and ensuring the safety of both the construction site and road users.
The Construction Bureau noted that the team maintains the principle that construction quality and safety are equally important in all public works projects. The award-winning projects implemented comprehensive project risk assessments, selected safe construction methods, and demonstrated excellent performance in occupational safety and health management and technological disaster prevention, providing workers with a secure working environment. They expressed gratitude for the construction team's outstanding performance in protecting site safety.
The Construction Bureau explained that to implement construction safety measures and realize Mayor Lu's vision of “Wealthy Taichung, New Quality Construction,” the team has adopted a multi-pronged approach to managing construction quality and safety. They have received Golden Safety Awards for six consecutive years. They will continue improving the occupational safety and health environment, working towards zero occupational accidents, zero safety incidents, and zero accidents in public works, advancing to new heights in public construction occupational safety.
