To support the 2050 net-zero carbon emissions policy and promote green transportation development, Taichung City has specially allocated a budget for 2024 to purchase a 1.95-ton all-electric recycling vehicle with a range exceeding 300km, capable of performing garbage collection and recycling duties in narrow alleys. Last year's budget included NT$13.5 million to purchase 150 more electric motorcycles for environmental service duties. A vehicle handover ceremony was held today (12th) in the first-floor lobby of the City Hall. Secretary-General Chong-Dian Huang attended and stated that the city government continues to promote the "Blue Sky White Cloud Action Plan," with Taichung being the first among the six special municipalities to purchase all-electric sanitation vehicles, hoping to enhance energy conservation and carbon reduction benefits.
Secretary-General Huang stated that in response to Mayor Shiu-Yen Lu's "Blue Sky White Cloud Action Plan" to improve mobile pollution sources, 450 electric motorcycles have been purchased since 2022 for frontline sanitation workers to perform environmental maintenance work. Furthermore, electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions by 40% compared to fuel vehicles. Based on the annual mileage of Taichung's sanitation vehicles, the reduced carbon emissions are equivalent to planting 140 trees annually, demonstrating the city government's determination to achieve the 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal. He also hopes sanitation team members can achieve better results in their cleaning work.
Environmental Protection Bureau Director Hong-Yi Chen explained that the bureau had purchased a 1.95-ton all-electric recycling vehicle for collection and transportation. The car is fully powered by electricity and equipped with solar charging systems and energy storage modules to provide power for the lifting tailgate, reducing noise, air pollution, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions. He also mentioned that electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions by approximately 153.9g per kilometer compared to fuel vehicles. Based on Taichung's sanitation vehicles' average annual mileage of about 10,000 kilometers, this will reduce carbon emissions by 1,539kg, equivalent to planting 140 trees annually.
Additionally, Taichung continues to promote the "Blue Sky White Cloud Action Plan," actively improving air quality based on the principle of "public before private, large before small." Between 2022 and 2023, the city government purchased 300 electric motorcycles for frontline sanitation workers to perform environmental maintenance. Last year's budget included NT$13.5 million to buy 150 more electric motorcycles for environmental service duties, further promoting green transportation tools.
The Environmental Protection Bureau stated that all of Taichung's EPB official motorcycles have been fully electrified, replacing traditional fuel motorcycles. This reduces pollution emissions, allows staff to complete duties more efficiently and environmentally, improves the city's air quality, and advances toward the 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal.
At today's event, Fengyuan District Sanitation Team Leader Min-Lang Huang received the keys on behalf of the team. Secretary-General Huang, City Councilor Shih-Chou Liu, Environmental Protection Bureau Director Hong-Yi Chen, and others attended. A representative from City Councilor Pei-Han Lin's service office also participated in supporting the city government's promotion of net-zero carbon emissions policies and expressed best wishes to sanitation personnel.
